MEXICO CITY : Free Trade on Agenda

Share

Mexican President Carlos Salinas de Gortari will be talking free trade as he meets with President Bush in Houston on Sunday, then travels on to Canada.

The trip is meant to pave the way for crucial negotiations beginning in June that will be aimed at creating a three-nation North American trading bloc dwarfing the much-ballyhooed, unified European market of 1992. Salinas will also address the Canadian Parliament and meet with Prime Minister Brian Mulroney.

Salinas is expected to stress the importance of confining upcoming trade talks to commercial issues. Environmental, human rights and labor groups in the United States and Canada want those issues also discussed as part of the agreement.
