Talks to Focus on Holocaust

In commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the Holocaust, UC San Diego will present free public lectures beginning tonight. “Racism, Genocide and the Holocaust” will continue Wednesday nights through June 5. Each lecture starts at 7 p.m. in Room 2250 of the Humanities and Social Science building on the Muir Campus.

Tonight’s lecture is by Holocaust survivor Gerda Klein, author of “All But My Life.”

Here are the other speakers and their topics:

April 10: Professor Lawrence Baron, director of the Lipinsky Institute for Judaic Studies at San Diego State University, on “Dynamics of Decency: Why People Rescued Jews in Nazi Occupied Europe.”

April 17: Professor Debra Lipstadt, from Occidental College’s history department, on “They Call Anne Frank’s Diary a Fraud: The Tactics of the Holocaust Deniers.”

April 24: Professor Leo Kuper from UC Los Angeles’ sociology department, on “Genocide in the 20th Century and Its Prevention.”

May 1: Professor Richard Hovannisian, from UCLA’s Near Eastern Center, on “The Armenian Genocide: Denial and Remembrance.”

May 8: Professor Christopher Browning, from Pacific Lutheran University’s history department, on “Perpetrators of the Holocaust: Desk-Murderers and Shooters.”

May 15: Professor Peter Hays, Northwestern University’s history department, on “Profits and Persecution: Corporate Involvement in the Holocaust.”

May 22: Professor John Roth, Claremont-McKenna College’s philosophy department, on “Holocaust Questions: Philosophical and Religious Inquiries After Auschwitz.”

May 29: Professor Michael Marrus, Toronto University’s history department, on “Re-entering History: The Study of the Holocaust”

June 5: Professor Leonard Dinnerstein, University of Arizona’s history department, on “Racism and Anti-Semitism in American History.”
