RAMS : Details Done: Robinson’s Deal Extended Through 1993 Season

Share

The Rams and Coach John Robinson finally have settled the details and agreed to a three-year contract extension, tying him to the club through the 1993 season.

Robinson, 55, was scheduled to enter the last season of a five-year deal this year but was assured by owner Georgia Frontiere before the last weekend of the 1990 season that he would be given a new contract in the off-season.

“It was agreed to some time ago, quite some time ago,” Robinson said Thursday. “It was just the process of getting the type done and all that.

“We agreed in principle early, and so it had never been an issue and it never has been an issue. It feels good, and now we’re busy thinking ahead to this next season.”

Robinson, who is heading into his ninth season with the Rams and would finish his 12th at the end of this contract, said he isn’t sure if this is his last contract with the Rams or not.

“I’m just trying to get through this weekend,” Robinson said. “I don’t have any of those plans. In three years I will be, let’s see, 59. I don’t know. We’ll just have to see.”

WITH THE RAMS John Robinson has had the longest run of any head coach in Ram history, eight years. Four other men served in the job for five years. Here’s how their winning percentages compare to Robinson’s:

Years Coach Percentage 8 (‘83-90) John Robinson .544 5 (‘78-82) Ray Malavasi .548 5 (‘73-77) Chuck Knox .780 5 (‘66-70) George Allen .708 5 (‘55-59) Sid Gillman .475
