Jump In: Barbara Bush isn’t afraid to get her feet wet in pursuit of a good catch. The First Lady was fishing off Key West, Fla., Tuesday with Kitty Brady, wife of the secretary of the treasury, when their fishing guide said the best spot was farther out. But when the 15-foot skiff scraped bottom, “Barbara said: ‘The heck with it. Let’s get out,’ ” said the guide. And the 65-year-old Bush, in cotton pants and sweater, hopped into the water and started pushing. Brady joined her.

* Swept Away: The Secret Service’s sweep of the National Theatre before George Bush visits can be thorough--some say too thorough. Last week before the President watched a musical, one agent dropped and broke an oboe and someone misplaced conductor Vincent Fanuele’s dress shoes. Soon enough, a replacement oboe was found. But the conductor wouldn’t budge until his dress shoes showed up, so the curtain was delayed 18 minutes.

* Wrong Angle: Interior Secretary Manuel Lujan will address the June 3 meeting of the American Urological Society in Toronto. According to the agenda, Lujan’s topic is “Water: The Life Line of Urology.” Lujan expected to talk about water--but not that kind. A spokesman said the flap amused Lujan, who will discuss the national, not personal, supply and demand for water.

* Protest: About 20 middle-aged South Korean women protesting a landfill that threatens their homes and lands bared their breasts Thursday outside a provincial office. Police said the women removed their blouses and sweaters in an apparent, ultimately futile effort to deter South Korea’s riot police from dispersing them. The landfill would obliterate their small fishing village.
