CAMARILLO : Water Restrictions Eased After Rains

Share

Camarillo residents will get more water for their money after the city decided Wednesday to reduce mandated water restrictions from 30% to 20%.

The city followed the lead of the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California, which on Tuesday eased water cutbacks from 50% to 31% because of last month’s heavy rainfall. The MWD supplies all or some of the water used by Simi Valley, Thousand Oaks, Moorpark, Oxnard and Camarillo.

Increased water rates that were approved last month will remain in effect, said Anita Bingham, the city’s finance director. But under the new system, residents can use more water before having to pay them. Wednesday’s measure is designed to limit single-family households of four residents or fewer to 8,976 gallons of water a month. This amount is nearly 750 gallons more than was previously allowed.

Agricultural users will also benefit from the new measure, Bingham said. Farmers can use 50% of their 1990 amounts instead of the 10% that they were restricted to earlier.

The decision is retroactive to April 1, when the rate increases went into effect.
