World IN BRIEF : PANAMA : Treaty Signed to Aid U.S. in Drug Cases

Panama signed a legal assistance treaty with the United States, giving American officials access to secret Panamanian bank accounts when they investigate drug trafficking and money laundering. The treaty “will send a loud and clear message to the world that in Panama, we are not condoning the crime of money laundering and the drug problem,” Panama’s second vice president, Guillermo (Billy) Ford, told reporters at the signing.
