Making Way for President’s Serve

Share

* What a thrill to be in the right place at the right time! President Bush and I decided to play tennis at the same time at the Balboa Bay Racquet Club (“Newport Tennis Club Nets a Surprise Visit From the First Player,” April 6)!

His motorcade almost ran over my Honda Civic but a police officer had me pull over just in time to allow the 15-plus limousines and press cars to enter the club parking lot ahead of me.

Members were allowed to enter the club to play our scheduled matches. Most were delayed as we tried to see our very fit President play tennis with our pros. We peeked through the backdrops from four courts away when a Secret Service agent let us sneak a glimpse of the match.

It made me feel proud, as a retired health and physical education teacher, to see George Bush looking so fit and trim and much younger than his years playing such a fine game of tennis. My only regret is that we were not assigned to the same court for a game of mixed doubles. Maybe next time!
