The article by Benny Kass, “How Long to Keep Tax Records” (March 3), failed to recognize the fact that different states have different requirements.

Inasmuch as California has a four-year retention statute and federal returns form the beginning basis for its returns it would of course be necessary to retain federal as well as state returns for at least four years, barring other contingencies.
