Bobby Labonte followed a lapped car around Dale Earnhardt to take the lead with 18 laps left and held on to win his first Busch Grand National race in the Budweiser 250 at Bristol, Tenn.

Labonte set a track record for a Grand National race at the high-banked .533-mile Bristol International Raceway with an average speed of 92.875 m.p.h. The previous record was 85.776 m.p.h., set by Rick Wilson in 1989.

Labonte was second to Earnhardt when Davey Allison, working his way back into the lead lap, dipped below Earnhardt and passed him. Labonte took advantage of the pathway opened by Allison to get by Earnhardt and cruised to the victory in his Oldsmobile.
