BASEBALL DAILY REPORT : AROUND THE MAJOR LEAGUES : Rangers Sign Downing to One-Year Deal
Brian Downing, a nonroster invitee to spring training with Texas, signed a one-year, $425,000 contract with the Rangers Saturday.
The former Angel was two for three in an 11-4 loss to Baltimore.
Infielder Denny Walling was placed on the 15-day disabled list to make room for Downing. Walling, who pulled his right hamstring muscle in the ninth inning of Friday’s game against the Orioles, became the sixth Ranger on the disabled list.
Downing, 40, spent the past 13 seasons with the Angels. He was invited to the Rangers’ major league spring training camp as a free agent March 28, but broke a small bone in his right hand on April 1 when he was hit with a pitch.
