It was bad enough that Cal State Northridge was playing its worst game of the season, but to get humiliated was a little too much for Matadors Coach Bill Kernan to take.

After Sunday’s 12-1 loss to San Diego State, Kernan had a hard time understanding why the Aztecs were bunting and stealing with a 9-1 lead in the eighth inning.

“We’ve blown enough teams out this year and that’s not how we’ve played,” Kernan said.

If he led CSUN again by eight runs in the eighth inning, SDSU Coach Jim Dietz said he would play it the same way. SDSU (29-1) blew an 8-1 lead to CSUN Friday night in three innings, Dietz said. “WE were only up eight runs,” he said. “This is college baseball. This is not cricket. With aluminum bats, you never know. . . .”
