* Raising 14 children would be more than enough to keep most women fully occupied, but Hortensia Flavia Tamayo, 58, somehow found time to volunteer for virtually every church and school activity in sight. Still, she said she “didn’t know what to think” when the Franciscan Guild of Los Angeles named her Mexican Mother of the Year for 1991. “It makes me feel very humble, honored,” she added. A Los Angeles native who still helps her husband Luis in the family’s Boyle Heights jewelry store, Tamayo sticks to the basics in child-rearing. “First, you just have to love them, of course,” she said. “Be firm. Don’t tell them something and not follow it up. Keep them close to home. Don’t give them too much free time.”

* The Rev. Rafael J. Aragon, 52, has assumed the top executive’s post for Presbyterian churches in Southern California. He was elected after 14 years as associate executive for Hispanic ministries and human services, a department that assists eight neighborhood centers with job training and classes to help Latinos. A native of Cuba, Aragon also established amnesty processing centers at Presbyterian churches that helped more than 10,000 immigrants become legal residents. He said his election to head the synod, or regional body, demonstrated “the willingness of the Presbyterian Church to be faithful to its mandate of being an inclusive church.”
