Fifty firefighters extinguished a blaze at an indoor pistol range before thousands of rounds of ammunition could turn the windowless building into an explosive inferno, a San Diego Fire Department captain said Thursday.

Smoke and flames became trapped Wednesday evening inside the San Diego Indoor Range in the 3300 block of India Street until firefighters cut access holes in the building’s roof, Fire Capt. Al Macdonald said. Three firefighters were treated for heat exhaustion and one fire captain injured his ankle, he said. The four were treated at UC San Diego Medical Center.

Nearly 3,000 rounds of small caliber ammunition were found inside the pistol range and removed by the department’s Explosive Device Team, he said.

Damage was estimated at $200,000 and the cause, although still under investigation, has been labeled incendiary, a department spokeswoman said.
