CHOLERA CHECK: County health officials are scrambling to get the culture sample needed to test for cholera, which has killed more than 1,000 people in Peru since January and is spreading through South America. . . . Epidemic outbreaks of cholera haven’t been seen in the Western Hemisphere since the 1800s, so health officials haven’t had to test for it, county epidemiologist Dr. George Gellert said. “We expect to see perhaps a trickle of cases occurring in Southern California. . . . But we don’t anticipate a severe problem.”
