Escapee Has a Few Moments Before the Bottom Falls Out

An inmate at the County Jail in Chula Vista was captured during a botched escape attempt after he literally fell into a jail captain’s office, authorities said Friday.

Rudolph Moon Jr., 32, of San Diego managed to move a ceiling light fixture in his jail cell and climb into the false ceiling about 8 p.m. Thursday, authorities said.

As he crawled along the false ceiling made of acoustical tile, the ceiling gave way and he plummeted into the captain’s office, said Pearl Janulewicz, a spokeswoman for the Sheriff’s Department. His movement along the ceiling also triggered sensors within the jail’s new alarm system, which was installed last year, she added.

Deputies entered the office and captured Moon, she said. He was treated for minor scratches and transferred to the County Jail in downtown.

Moon is being held on 10 counts of robbery in lieu of $250,000 bail.
