7 Students, Altadena Man Win Fellowships

Seven students at the Claremont Colleges and an Altadena resident have won fellowships from the Thomas J. Watson Foundation of Rhode Island for a year of independent foreign research and travel for recent college graduates.

Each fellow receives $13,000 and those accompanied by a dependent receive $18,000. The foundation is a charitable trust established in memory of the founder of IBM.

Dennis Clark of Claremont McKenna College, an international relations major, will explore the evolving relationship between environmental protection and economic restructuring in the Soviet Union.

Kristen S. Hukari of Pomona College, an anthropology major, will study the lamb and wool industries in Australia and New Zealand.

Augustine F. Porras of Pitzer College, who graduated this year with a degree in English-film studies, will study Mexican-American identities and culture in Mexico.

Scripps College has two fellows: Jean Connolly, a sociology major, who will study the experiences of rape survivors in England, Ireland and Sweden, and Hannah Reeves, an anthropology major, who will live with the Aka Pygmies of Central Africa and the aborigines of the Northern Territory of Australia learning their ways of tracking people and animals.

Harvey Mudd College winners are Eric Prosser, a physics major, who will study traditional methods of brewing beer in Europe and the role the beers play in the traditions of the surrounding communities, and Paul Hagelin, an engineering major who will study robot development in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Denmark.

Robert W. Jenkins of Altadena, a student at Bowdoin College in Maine, a history and government major, will study the transformation of South African society by working and living as a member of a designated black township near Johannesburg.
