From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Tens of thousands of students, workers and dissidents demanded the ouster of South Korean President Roh Tae Woo in nationwide protests over the fatal beating of a student by police April 26. In Seoul, about 2,000 protesters marching toward City Hall were stopped at a U.S. diplomatic building along the route and driven back by thousands of riot police backed by armored vans and water cannon. The beating death by police of a college student on April 26 triggered the protests, the largest so far this year. The demonstrations and a series of self-immolations by students have created the most serious challenge to the Roh government since it took office in 1988.
