For dedicated gardeners, here are suggestions from the California Assn. of Nurserymen on what to do in the garden this week:

* Give Mother a lasting token of your love for Mother’s Day with a gift from the garden center.

* Use tomato cages around tomato plants. These wire cylinders keep the plant off the ground, improve fruit set and ease harvest.

* Plant marguerites, euryops and other perennials now for months of blooming beauty.

* Plant tasty herbs for use in summer barbecue. Try mint and rosemary for lamb or basil for beef or pork.

* Water lawns while the outside temperature is rising. Early morning is best.
