Gay Rights Bills Opposed; Official Quits in Protest
The Lancaster City Council voted Monday night to oppose pending state gay rights legislation, prompting the deputy city clerk to announce that he is a homosexual and to resign in protest.
“I can’t support their bigotry,” said deputy clerk Alan Robertson, 44, who has worked for the city since last May. He made his announcement in front of a council chamber packed with more than 100 members of religious groups who had urged the council to oppose the legislation.
Robertson’s protest came after the council voted 5-0 to oppose bills that would recognize marriages by couples of the same sex and make it unlawful to discriminate in housing or employment on the basis of sexual orientation.
