Share

Songs, dances, arts and crafts from Eastern Europe will highlight the city of Ventura’s annual “Children’s Celebration of the Arts” at Mission Park on Saturday.

Marking its 10th anniversary, Children’s Celebration is designed to introduce children and their families to various art forms, event coordinator Sonia Tower said.

“The theme for this year’s event, ‘The Free Spirit of Art,’ will focus on the new freedoms of artistic expression that are being experienced today in many Eastern European countries,” Tower said.

Activities will include Bulgarian folk music and dances, Russian cymbal playing and a Tolstoy mini-play performed by children. Children participating in the arts and crafts workshops will design Ukrainian hats, make Russian musical instruments and create flags from Eastern European countries, Tower said.

Donations from the Faria Family Foundation and Target Stores have enabled professional artists to conduct a series of free art workshops in the Ventura Unified School District during the four weeks before the event, Tower said, culminating an art outreach effort by the city.

Admission to the Children’s Celebration is free. The event, at Mission Park across from the San Buenaventura Mission, is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
