Chevron Corp. named Condoleezza Rice, 36, an associate professor of political science at Stanford University, to its previously all-male board of directors. With her appointment, the board increases to 13 from 12 members.

Rice, who joined the Stanford faculty in 1981, was on leave from the university from early 1989 until last month, during which time she served in the Bush Administration as director for Soviet and East European affairs with the National Security Council, as senior director for Soviet affairs and finally as special assistant to President Bush for national security affairs.

Rice, known as Condy, is the first woman to serve on the San Francisco-based oil company’s board since December, 1988, when Carla Anderson Hills resigned after being named U.S. Trade Representative.
