SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Three City Council members were presented with recall notices Tueday night by residents angry about recent allegations of conflicts of interest.

Dennis Dean presented Mayor Wayne D. Wedin and council members Ron Isles and Carrey J. Nelson each with a notice of intention to circulate a recall petition.

Dean, who is spearheading the drive with resident William Vega, alleges that the three were aware in 1989 of what the residents called a conflict of interest by Isles, whose actions in regard to a development are under investigation by the Orange County district attorney’s office.

That investigation focuses on a commercial project proposed by developer Don McBride, who is a business partner of Isles. Isles voted in favor of the project.

Wedin became a target for investigation by the state Fair Political Practices Commission after a report appeared in The Times saying that Wedin had taken several actions as a councilman that benefited a planning firm he had a business relationship with. The firm was selected last year to conduct a city study.

Nelson is not a target of any investigation, but Dean and Vega accused him Tuesday night of owning property in the city’s redevelopment area and therefore standing to profit from that redevelopment.
