World IN BRIEF : WASHINGTON, D.C. : Court Rejects Award in Fatal KAL Flight

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit threw out a $50-million punitive damage award against Korean Air Lines for the deaths of 269 people aboard a KAL jumbo jet shot down by a Soviet fighter pilot in 1983. A jury in 1989 had awarded the punitive damages to the families of 137 passengers that filed suit. The families of the other victims settled, each receiving $100,000. The appeals court upheld the jury’s finding that the airline was guilty of willful misconduct in failing to correct Flight 007’s course as it flew into Soviet airspace.
