Japanese Firms Deny Withholding Technology: Sen. Lloyd Bentsen (D-Tex.) had accused them of withholding their most advanced semiconductor tools from American firms. “We were surprised,” a Hitachi spokesman said. “We have reportedly been withholding ion implanters from U.S. makers, but we haven’t received orders for these from the U.S.” A Canon spokesman said: “We can’t understand why the U.S. made such a claim because we have never had orders for CVD (chemical vapor deposition) devices.” Nikon, Tokyo Electron and Dainippon Screen Manufacturing Co. also were accused of withholding technology.
