ORANGE : District to Consider School Transfer Plan

Share

The Orange Unified School District is scheduled to consider a controversial proposal tonight that would transfer sixth-graders from Lampson Elementary School to Portola Middle School to relieve overcrowding.

In a closed session last week, the district Board of Trustees considered eight plans to resolve the enrollment problem at Lampson, among them the recommendation to transfer pupils.

Lampson’s student population is now 1,020. The campus was built for 720, and there are already 10 portable classrooms there. “The school’s population changes hourly,” said Principal Carolyn Reichert. The portable classrooms have taken over playground space, and classrooms earmarked for special programs have been pressed into service for regular classes.

“The projection is for (Lampson) to have 2,000 students by the year 2000,” Reichert said. “We have to do something. We can’t just keep bringing portables here.”
