Barrowman, Biondi Upset in Specialties

Spain’s Sergi Lopez outraced world record-holder Mike Barrowman in the 200-meter breaststroke and Matt Biondi lost the 50-meter freestyle Saturday in the Gran Premio de Tenerife swim meet at Santa Cruz de Tenerife in the Canary Islands.

Barrowman, at 2 minutes 17.67 seconds, was way off his record time and finished behind Lopez and Spanish teammate Roque Santos. Lopez was clocked in 2:17.08.

The top finishers were three abreast until Lopez pulled away in the final 20 meters. American Kirk Stackle was fourth.

Biondi, who holds four world records and six Olympic medals, lost to American Steve Crocker in the freestyle sprint.

Crocker won in 22.84 seconds, followed by Biondi in 22.88. Tom Jager was third in 23.27.

In the 100-meter butterfly, Brian Alderman surged past Martin Lopez Zubero for the victory. Alderman finished in 54.57 seconds, while the Spaniard came in a length back at 55.22. Biondi finished third in 55.30.

Lopez Zubero won the 100-meter backstroke over Americans Andy Gill, Dan Veatch and Scott Johnson. Lopez Zubero finished in 56.77 seconds, followed by Gill in 57.15, Veatch in 57.59 and Johnson in 58.38.
