From Times Staff and Wire Reports

The Serbian minority in Croatia has voted overwhelmingly in favor of uniting a large chunk of the republic with the rival republic of Serbia and staying in Yugoslavia, the Tanjug news agency said. Official results showed that 99% favored the move in a referendum Sunday in the Krajina region of Croatia. The vote is likely to aggravate the explosive relations between Croatians, who want to secede from Yugoslavia, and Serbs. Stipe Mesic, a Croat who takes over Wednesday as the first non-Communist federal president, called the referendum illegal.
