Poehl Will Issue Statement About His Future: The chief of Germany’s central bank will, later this week, address news reports that he plans to quit, the Bundesbank said. Karl Otto Poehl has resisted government efforts to expand the Bundesbank’s policy-setting Central Bank Council to include representatives from the five new states in eastern Germany. Poehl has also been an advocate of high interest rates to keep inflation in check and strengthen the German mark. In Bonn, government spokesman Dieter Vogel told reporters that Poehl had not informed Chancellor Helmut Kohl about his plans. Vogel said it was now up to Poehl to respond to the reports.
