A British engineer has been convicted of spying in Iraq and sentenced to life imprisonment, the British Foreign Office said Friday.

Douglas Brand, 51, who was arrested while trying to escape from Iraq last September, was said to have been put on trial Sunday when he was taken to court from Abu Ghraib prison, 15 miles north of Baghdad.

Foreign Office Minister Douglas Hogg summoned the Jordanian ambassador Friday morning to express the government’s “concern and anger” over the trial and verdict. Jordan represents Iraq’s interests in Britain.
