DHAHRAN, Saudi Arabia — The number of U.S. troops still in the Persian Gulf War theater dropped below 100,000 Sunday.
At the height of the crisis after Iraq’s Aug. 2 invasion of Kuwait, the United States had deployed more than 530,000 troops. They have been leaving at a rate of about 5,000 a day.
After Sunday’s departure, 97,500 remain, U.S. military officials said.
The total does not include several thousand troops sent to assist Kurdish refugees in northern Iraq.
