Steve Varner of Riverside needed little of the 4,000 horsepower his “Caught in the Act” generates, winning the top-fuel hydro drag-boat class at Lake Castaic when Ron Braaksma’s “Madness” went over the starting line ahead of the green light. Varner had earlier scored a low elapsed time of 6.05 seconds at more than 204 m.p.h.
