Officials Probing Racist Memo Sent to Students

School officials and authorities are investigating a racist memo sent to Santa Monica High School students under the school district’s bulk mail permit.

The memo, purportedly from the school’s “Assn. for the Advancement of Conservative White Americans,” makes offensive remarks about Mexicans and attacks last year’s student body president and this year’s homecoming queen, who are Latino. About 700 Spanish-surnamed families received the memo Wednesday, Supt. Eugene Tucker said.

“We find this despicable, contrary to everything the district stands for,” Tucker said. Student assemblies to discuss the incident are scheduled for today, he said.

The mailing used the district headquarters as the return address and address labels from last year. Tucker said the memo could be the work of a student, alumnus, employee or someone with access to the mailing labels.
