ORANGE : $900,000 in Grants Being Distributed

Almost $900,000 in federal grants will be used to fund local nonprofit organizations and for city programs and improvements.

At this week’s meeting, the City Council unanimously decided to give local nonprofit agencies about $223,000 in federal Community Development Block Grants. The grant recipients included the Central Orange County YWCA, which received $76,000, and the Food Distribution Center, which received $39,000.

Also, the council gave Orange County Youth and Family Services $20,000 to operate the Amparo Youth Services Shelter, and granted $12,000 to the Mariposa Women’s Center for substance abuse counseling.

About $671,000 in grants went to city departments, including $172,000 to Community Development and $23,000 to the El Modena Branch Library. The council also voted to spend $475,000 for water main and storm drain improvements citywide.
