THE OJAI FESTIVAL

Share

This year’s Ojai Festival matches music from Mozart’s final year, 1791, with new and recent works by composer-conductors John Harbison and Peter Maxwell Davies. The opening concert, at 8:30 p.m. Friday in Libbey Bowl, above, joins Harbison’s Concerto for Oboe and Clarinet and his “Exequien for Calvin Simmons” with Mozart arias and dances. Saturday at 5 p.m. Maxwell Davies leads the world premiere of his “Ojai Festival Overture” and the U.S. premiere of his Clarinet Concerto, with more Mozart dances. The 9:30 p.m. Saturday concert moves to Ojai Presbyterian Church for chamber music. Next Sunday morning’s concert of vocal music includes the world premiere of Harbison’s “Ave verum corpus” motet, paired with Mozart’s setting of the same text; the evening program offers U.S. premieres from Maxwell Davies plus Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto.
