Seeking a Remedy for a Child-Care Dilemma

I have been following with interest your series on child care. I am one of the rare and fortunate ones: My husband works. I stay at home and raise our two children. We have made terrific sacrifices to do so, but it is important to us.

I was troubled by the photo of Patsy Lane and her son, captioned, “(I) wouldn’t change having my son for anything. But finding day care is pretty difficult.” I find the assumption that giving birth necessitates immediately locating a stranger to raise that child horrifying.

What are our children to think when they are given the message that raising them is not the most important thing we an do? That it’s OK to shuttle them from situation to situation until decent care is found?

I understand that for many, day care is necessary. But to see this phenomenon grow and grow without an examination of its causes and effects is an injustice to the next generation.
