Wreford G. Chapple; WWII Sub Commander, Retired Admiral

Wreford G. (Moon) Chapple, 83, retired rear admiral whose World War II submarine heroics were the basis of the 1950s television series “The Silent Service.” A submarine commander when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, Chapple sank the Haro Maru, the second Japanese ship destroyed in the war. He also sank a Japanese attack ship near Mindanao in the Philippines. For his bravery, Chapple received two Navy Crosses, three Silver Stars and one Bronze Star. He commanded the cruiser Pittsburgh during the Korean War. On May 20 in Coronado.
