FILLMORE : Superintendent of Schools Resigns

Marlene Davis, superintendent of the Fillmore Unified School District, has resigned after four years on the job to head the Southfield Public School District in suburban Detroit, Mich.

Davis, 45, who resigned last week from her $74,000-a-year post, said she has been happy in Fillmore but wants to return to her native Michigan. She was born in Dearborn.

The Southfield district, which has 8,800 students, is about twice the size of the Fillmore district.

Assistant Supt. Robert Kernen will serve as acting superintendent until a successor is named, said Dick Richardson, school board chairman.

The district will advertise nationally until mid-July for candidates to replace Davis, Richardson said. But it is unlikely that a new superintendent will be named until after classes begin in August, he said.
