From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Fundamentalists captured without opposition the presidency of the 15-million-member Southern Baptist Convention, the largest U.S. Protestant denomination. Morris H. Chapman, pastor of First Baptist Church in Wichita Falls, Tex., was elected after urging the Atlanta gathering to “just say no” to those who don’t believe in the literal truth of the Bible. The convention voted to end financial support of the Baptist Joint Committee on Public Affairs, an inter-Baptist lobby on church-state issues long criticized for opposing school prayer and tax credits for private school tuition.
