Baptists Attack NEA: The Southern Baptist Convention passed a resolution Wednesday deploring President Bush’s handling of the National Endowment for the Arts controversy and urging him to fire its chairman, John E. Frohnmayer. The NEA has been under fire for approving grants for projects such as one depicting a crucifix submerged in urine. Bush, who is to speak before the convention today, has supported the federal agency, saying he does not want to censor art. The convention’s resolution also states that all funds to the arts agency should be discontinued unless standards are set to prevent the support of “morally repugnant and sacrilegious ‘art.’ ”
