The White House charged that Iraq has diverted substantial quantities of U.N. food shipments destined for the Kurdish refugees in the north to Iraqi President Saddam Hussein’s hometown of Tikrit. White House Press Secretary Marlin Fitzwater said the United Nations has frozen further shipments of the U.N. World Food Program into Iraq until the problem is resolved. According to Bush Administration officials, Iraq diverted 79 tons of 3,300 tons of flour shipped to northern Iraq for the Kurds in Mosul, near the Turkish border, to Tikrit.
