WORLD IN BRIEF : ISRAEL : Shamir Reportedly Spurns Peace Plan

Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir has sent a negative reply to a letter from President Bush that sought to bridge Israeli-Arab differences on Middle East peace talks, Israeli radio stations reported. They quoted U.S. and Israeli sources in Washington as saying Shamir rejected Bush’s suggestions that the United Nations have an observer role in a proposed regional peace conference and that the conference reconvene periodically.
