Greek Prime Minister Constantine Mitsotakis arrived in Cyprus on Friday, saying that he wants to end the island’s division between Greek and Turkish Cypriot communities.

His pledge came 16 years after the junta then ruling Greece inspired a coup that led to Cyprus’ invasion by Turkey. The northern third of the island is now controlled by Turkish Cypriots.

“We all seek a just and viable solution within the U.N. framework . . . a united Cyprus, a federation in which both (Greek and Turkish Cypriot) communities will participate,” he said in an interview carried by Cyprus television last week.
