Daughter’s Sobriety

Share

The following paragraph in your obituary (Part A, June 12) of my former husband, Joe Hamilton, is far from the truth:

“In the late 1970s, he (Hamilton) and Burnett were widely praised for their openness in dealing with the drug problems of their daughter, Carrie. But in 1982, they separated, Burnett saying at the time that those problems were ‘driving a wedge into my marriage.’ ”

At the time of our divorce, Carrie had been in a complete state of sobriety for two years. Under these circumstances, to lay the blame on Carrie for the divorce is manifestly unfair and untrue.

Carrie’s period of sobriety has reached 10 years and she works constructively, speaking to preteens, teen-agers and college students on drug abuse. Her work has been a constant source of pride to Joe and to me. If he were with us today, he would be the first to confirm the facts stated above.
