World IN BRIEF : GERMANY : Ex-Nazi Officer Going on Trial

Josef Schwammberger goes on trial today in Stuttgart in the first Nazi trial since reunification of Germany last October. It also could be the last major Nazi war crimes trial. Schwammberger, 79, a former SS lieutenant, is charged with murdering or helping to murder 3,377 people. Most of the victims were Jewish inmates of labor camps in Nazi-occupied Poland during World War II.
