From Times Staff and Wire Reports

About 750 firefighters battled dozens of lightning-caused wildfires in interior Alaska, including one that was burning near the trans-Alaska pipeline. The largest, called the Hess Creek fire, grew to 11,850 acres and was about a mile from the pipeline, said a spokeswoman for the Alaska Interagency Fire Center at Ft. Wainwright in Fairbanks. About 170 firefighters had built six miles of lines around the fire and planned to use explosives to start back-burn fires to stop the blaze.
