Grad Nite Shouldn’t Involve Gambling

I commend the efforts of the Westside communities for working together to develop an environment free of alcohol and other drugs for their graduating high school seniors (Times, June 20). However, trading in your alcohol and other drugs for casino tables represents the national trend toward underage gambling. It is a switch in addictions that may not be recognized by the police, the PTA or the school district.

Games involving prizes, consideration and chance are prohibited by state law for those under 18, and adults who enable those activities for those under 18 are endangering minors.

I hope the Grad Nite tradition will spread, but activities other than a casino night will have to be developed. I understand $50,000 was donated in goods and services for this spectacular event. It’s an excellent investment in a drug-free youth--but please check in with your vice squad when you plan your graduation night event.
