French and British workers linked up under the English Channel on Friday in the last of three tunnels making up the Channel Tunnel project, developers said.

The final linkup was in the second of two parallel tunnels that will carry rail passengers and freight between Britain and France beginning in 1993.

The connection in the first rail tunnel was made May 22 and the service tunnel that runs between the two rail links was joined in December.

Friday’s breakthrough was about three months ahead of schedule, developers said.

When the 14-mile tunnel is finished, high-speed trains will travel between London and Paris in less than four hours, the Anglo-French consortium Eurotunnel said.
