Japanese Volcano Continues to Shudder
Minor tremors and avalanches were reported Friday at a volcano in southwestern Japan where a major eruption killed dozens of people earlier this month.
A seismological observatory monitoring Mt. Unzen said 16 minor earthquakes and 69 volcanic tremors were registered by nightfall, 17 of them because of avalanches of rocks, ash and gas.
Unzen, about 610 miles southwest of Tokyo, blew up June 3, claiming 41 lives. Five days later, torrents of ash, gas and rock again sped down its slope, razing 73 homes.
More than 9,000 residents have been evacuated from outlying parts of Shimabara, a city of 45,000 at the foot of the mountain.
