Sundays in the Park With Yuppies
The article about the battle for Tomkins Square Park in New York City (“Nobody’s Park,” June 13) began with the point of view of yuppies who have recently moved into the area, gentrifying the community and attempting to turn it into another sterile playground for the upwardly mobile while kicking out the long-time residents, the homeless and squatter communities.
Rather than helping to remove the homeless from the park, the lady who saw the man defecating in front of her child could just explain to her child that the city has done nothing for these people and there is no place for them to go to the bathroom.
No, the city and the yuppies reacted as they always do to the undesirables. They kicked them out, as has happened in recent years in Venice and Santa Monica. The yuppies want to blind themselves to the fact that they are living in a system in collapse.
Both the yuppies and the homeless have claims to the park, and both could use it if the yuppies weren’t so threatened by the community they’ve chosen to live in.
