Heartening Profit: The $171,000 profit that Alpha Microsystems posted for its latest quarter (O.C. Earnings, D6) may not seem like much, but officials at the Santa Ana company were heartened by the numbers anyway.

It marked the first quarterly profit in a year for the manufacturer of business computers. And, company officials say, it was the first clear sign that the cost-cutting program and layoffs begun last year in response to the recession and slumping sales are beginning to pay off.

Douglas Tullio, chief executive, said he expects new product introductions in the coming months as part of the company’s continuing effort to reverse its slide.
